Informed Consent

By submitting wildlife observations to this platform, you agree to take part in a research project led by Cardiff University investigating wildlife–road interactions.

What participation involves
  • You may submit records of wildlife observed on or near roads (including roadkill or live sightings).

  • Submissions may include location, date, species information, and optional images.

  • Your contributions will be combined with other datasets and used for scientific research, publications, and policy-relevant outputs.

How your data will be used
  • Data will be used to understand patterns of wildlife mortality, distribution, and human–wildlife interactions.

  • Findings may be published in scientific journals, reports, and public-facing materials.

  • Data may be shared with collaborators and made available in aggregated or anonymised form for research and conservation purposes.

Privacy and data protection
  • We will handle all data in accordance with GDPR and institutional data protection policies.

  • Personal identifiers (e.g. names, email addresses) will not be shared publicly and will be stored securely.

  • Location data may be generalised (e.g. reduced spatial precision) to protect privacy and sensitive species.

  • We will not identify individual contributors in publications without explicit permission.

Voluntary participation
  • Your participation is entirely voluntary.

  • You may choose what information to provide and may stop contributing at any time.

  • If you wish to withdraw your data, please contact the research team (details below), and we will remove your identifiable contributions where possible.

Safety
  • You should only submit observations when it is safe to do so.

  • Do not put yourself at risk to record wildlife or roadkill (e.g. stopping on any roads or entering unsafe areas).

  • The project does not require or encourage any unsafe behaviour.

Acknowledgement and credit
  • We greatly value all contributions. Collective contributions will be acknowledged in outputs (e.g. as “citizen scientists” in paper acknowledgments).
